George Armstrong Custer was probably the most pivotal and controversial figure in the entire saga of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. His decisions set in motion the climactic events of June 25, 1876.
While often brash and, to some, foolhardy, Custer was a hero in the American Civil War. He followed the cavalry tactics of his day and led his men to the front, always believing his luck in his luck. At the age of 36, that luck ran out on a dusty hill in Montana Territory.
